Rapid to move to George Henry Lee's store
Oct 1 2007 EXCLUSIVE by Neil Hodgson, Liverpool Echo
RAPID Hardware is moving in to George Henry Lee’s store in Church Street. Years of negotiations have ended in a deal which sees home and garden specialists Rapid move from Renshaw Street and create 200 jobs in 2011.
Marks & Spencer will occupy the building in the short term while its Church Street Store undergoes a major refurbishment. It is understood the scale of the Liverpool One development convinced Rapid a move nearer the heart of Liverpool’s retail revolution was essential. The company’s current Renshaw Street base is in the process of being sold to developers who are working on a new scheme with city center regeneration company Liverpool Vision.
Rapid Group managing director Martin Doherty today said the extra space would catapult Rapid into a new retail league said: “Taking over the former George Henry Lee buildings gives us massively more space and that means more ideas, more innovation and more departments. I can promise that we will be delivering a totally new concept in home ware retailing. We realise that Liverpool is changing and we have to change with it."
George Henry Lee’s premises were built between 1853 and 1878 and are currently home to John Lewis. John Lewis moves out next spring to take up a new home in Liverpool One. Liverpool One project director Rod Holmes said:
“The Doherty family are successful local entrepreneurs. They have a new generation of ideas about how they see their business developing as the city center becomes a major regional destination again. They will bring variety to Church Street and be an answer to those people who talk about clone cities."The move ends speculation Rapid would leave Liverpool city center to set up shop on an out-of-town retail park. Mr Doherty said today: “We are proud to be a Liverpool company serving the people of Liverpool. We had many offers to move to a retail park but we still believe in city center retailing and it was always our wish to remain in the city where our business was founded and has flourished. I am delighted the move is now public. It will mean so much to our staff who have been so loyal for so long, despite the difficulties the Big Dig has created over the past few years.”
Rapid was established by Mr Doherty’s father Hugh in 1971.
